Reference Projects

CE-Line has collaborated with some remarkable organizations worldwide, involved in horticulture, waste water and aquaponic projects.

Horticulture

Horticulture

Gitzels Nursery

Cabbage and brocoli nursery
LOCATION The Netherlands (Wervershoof)
ACTIVITY Cabbage and Broccoli breeding
SIZE 120.000 m² +
CE-LINE since 2023, 2 units in place to measure nutrients of the irrigation water on a daily schedule, extension to measure returning drain water in 2024
PLATFORM 1 unit connected to a pump steered planning, 1 unit connected to a Hoogendoorn IIVO platform

“By using CE-Line we get what we wanted to have: control on our nutrients. This is simply to avoid mistakes and have a better plannability of our crop. This is very important to us since our breeding and logistics is on an exact schedule towards our customers. We simply rule out surprises.”

Mike Gitzels
Gitzels Nursery

“At Gitzels, the owners knew very well what to ask from us. They already had a clear picture on how they wanted to increase the control within the greenhouse water system. After attempts to build up a modular system themselves, they realized this wasn’t delivering a real solution, it simply didn’t work. Nevertheless, the implementation of CE-Line was therefore so very effortless, we were very pleased to have this particular launching customer.”

Horticulture

Wageningen University & Research

R&D in the KAS2030 project
LOCATION Bleiswijk(Wervershoof)
ACTIVITY Research, Gerbera growing
SIZE 4.000 m²
CE-LINE since 2024, to measure nutrient composition of irrigation water and drain water on a daily schedule, closed waterloop. Providing insights on nutrient reduction as part of energy savings.

“In the KAS2030 location Bleiswijk we run a program to show how we can minimize energy use in the greenhouse. Nutrient use is an important part of this. With CE-Line we can reduce the fertilizer use since we know exactly what is returning to the water management system, while at the same time see immediately if there are any deficits or overshoots in the dosing to the crop.”

Tommaso Barbagli
WUR | Senior Plant Scientist

“The WUR collaborated with us in long-time research in previous years. The placement of the unit now is marking the success we had in developing this together. The specific use at this location will teach us also how autonomously growing a crop can be realized. CE-Line measures and delivers data so fast, we can adjust the nutrient dosing compared to a growth plan to a nutrient-specific level on a daily basis. We also get more information on the effect of several water treatment systems like ozon on the nutrient base. ”

Horticulture

Agrocare

Tomato growing
LOCATION The Netherlands (Middenmeer)
ACTIVITY Tomato growing
SIZE 1.000.000 m² at site / 5.000.000 m² more in The Netherlands, Tunesia, Morocco
CE-LINE 2024, nutrient measurement of irrigation water, dirty drain water and cleaned & treated drain water for reuse in the process on a daily schedule, closed water loop. Providing data on nutrient uptake, for dosing purposes and controllability in the entire system.
PLATFORM 1 unit connected to a manually steered platform for maximal room for experiment

“We would like to have the CE-Line unit for a proof on the claims on optimization. Efficiency is so important at this scale. Besides that, we will work as a testcase for installations in our greenhouses in North Africa, where the delays to get our analysis done simply is unacceptably long.”

Bas Eilander
Agrocare | growth manager
“Agrocare is very aware of making a thorough analysis before investment in technology. I appreciate how we openly and challengingly set up an arrangement to demonstrate all of our unique contributions. The speed of action and the no-nonsense approach are very pleasant. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a typical Dutch example of entrepreneurship. We have been convincing enough, and they have the guts, but also trust, to move forward together.”

Waste water projects

WASTE WATER

Wageningen University & Research

R&D in the KAS2030 project
LOCATION The Netherlands
ACTIVITY Conversion of waste water into valuable compound for bio plastics
SIZE demo size production
CE-LINE 2023, fatty acids measurement at high frequency to steer the production of PHA polymers
PLATFORM 1 unit steered on a timer interval

“PHA polymers are produced by natural bacteria that use polymer as food reserve, just as humans use fat. These bacteria can accumulate PHA up to 90% of their cell

weight. They can do this while consuming organics in a wide variety of residual streams, such as industrial wastewater or solid organic wastes. To steer this process we need to follow the contents fatty acids. The development of the needed measurements by CE-Line was not complete at start but we agreed on a joint effort to realize it. That worked out faster than expected. Now we see what we want to see.

Dr. Ir. R.A. René Rozendal
Paques Biomaterials | CTO

“This CE-Line implementation was a demo for us. We improved the measurement capacity of CE-Line. The chemical analysis on how to make especially the C3 lactic acid visible, was a team effort based on the CE technology we use. This is one of our core qualities in our team!”

LOCATION Norway (Grimstad)

CE-Line Deployment Goal

Online monitoring of nutrients in various water streams related to salmon farming and lettuce cultivation in a vertical farm. This allows continuous insight and control over the nutrient composition.

INSTALLATION

Columbi Farms has developed a filtering process where the wastewater from salmon farming is converted into reusable water and nutrients. CE-Line is situated in the water space, controlling the filtration of the wastewater from salmon farming and in a high frequency providing the data for dosing additional nutrients to create the full spectrum for the vertical farm where lettuce is cultivated. Here CE-Line controls the irrigation and drain streams. This provides insights in the uptake of the crop for optimal adjustment of nutrient supply.

  1. Irrigation towards Vertical Farm – control of dosing
  2. Returning drain water from Vertical Farm – uptake of crop calculation
  3. Salmon farming wastewater – data on nutrient concentrations before filtration
  1. Ultra Filtration permeate – control of the process and filtration
  2. Concentrated nutrients – data on concentrations to steer additional dosing
  3. Reverse Osmose permeate – check on usability as fresh water for greenhouse or salmon factory use

Protocol/Frequency

Daily measurements are taken for irrigation and drain. The other four points (3-6) are measured consecutively after the start of the filtration process. CE-Line receives a signal to start the measurement. Cleaning and calibration of the CE-Line unit itself is automatically done during the night.

Result

Daily data for the different water streams is visually presented in tables and trend graphs. This allows for intervention in case of deviations and provides data for additional (automatic) dosing and full control over the nutrient composition.

Sustainability

The control over the water and nutrient systems makes it a fully closed water cycle.

I was introduced to the CE-Line solution at GREENTECH 2023. I realized we found the solution for measuring and dosing the nutrient mixture needed for crops in combination with our salmon activities. To directly measure and adjust the dosage, instead of having to wait a long time for laboratory results. So far, we had no good alternative for that.
